Overview
In the gravel plains of Jiddat al-Harasis in Al Wusta roams the Arabian oryx, a white desert antelope that was hunted to extinction in the wild and then, in one of conservation's great success stories, reintroduced onto this very range. Seeing it here, alongside Arabian gazelle, Nubian ibex and the elusive houbara bustard, is a rare and story-rich desert wildlife drive, best in the cool season when the animals are most active.

A remote central-desert drive across open gravel plains, cool comfortable winter conditions, and wild animals that require patience and a guide to find. Sightings are possible year-round but the cool months are best. This is a wilderness experience with minimal facilities, not a fenced safari park.

Wildlife travellers, conservation-minded visitors and those wanting a genuine remote-desert experience. Not for travellers wanting guaranteed close sightings or comfort.
Tips
- Go in the cool season (Oct-Mar) when the oryx are most active in daylight. - Take a knowledgeable guide; the animals range over a huge, featureless area. - Carry ample fuel, water and supplies; this is remote country. - Combine with Barr Al Hikman birding on the same Al Wusta loop.
