Overview
The Rub' al Khali, the Empty Quarter, is the largest continuous sand desert on the planet, and its Omani edge in Dhofar and Al Wusta is a place of mega-dunes, absolute silence and the route toward the lost city of Ubar at Shisr. Crossing into it is an expedition-grade adventure, only safe and bearable in the deep-winter cool of November to February. For the well-prepared, it is one of the great bucket-list desert journeys anywhere.

A serious multi-day 4x4 expedition across remote mega-dunes with no facilities, comfortable only in deep winter. This demands experienced desert drivers, convoy travel, and full self-sufficiency in fuel, water and recovery gear. Aspirational and premium; not a casual dune drive.

Experienced desert travellers, expedition and adventure seekers, and photographers. Not for beginners, families with young children, or anyone without proper support and vehicles.
Tips
- Go only in deep winter (Nov-Feb); the deep desert is unsafe in the heat. - Travel in a convoy of two or more properly equipped 4x4s with an experienced guide. - Carry ample fuel, water, navigation and recovery gear; there are no services. - Route via Shisr (Ubar) for the archaeology on the way in.
