Season
Whale Shark Season at the Daymaniyat Islands
Swim beside the biggest fish in the sea
Whale Shark Season at the Daymaniyat Islands is a travel season in Rustaq, Al Batinah South, Oman.
- When
- July 1, 2027 to October 31, 2027
Overview
In the plankton-rich waters around the Daymaniyat Islands, late summer draws the whale shark, the largest fish in the ocean, to feed near the surface. Harmless, slow and vast, they let snorkellers and divers glide alongside in warm, clear water. It is the marquee reason to be in the sea during the northern hot season, turning what looks like the off-season into one of Oman's hero water experiences, a short boat ride from Muscat or Al Batinah.
What to expect
Warm, calm late-summer water and a real but not guaranteed chance to snorkel with whale sharks; the peak weeks shift year to year. Note that landing on the islands is banned in the warmer months to protect nesting wildlife, but boat and in-water encounters continue. Best for confident swimmers; expect a boat trip and open water.
Best for
Snorkellers, divers and adventurous swimmers chasing a once-in-a-lifetime encounter in the hot season. Not for non-swimmers or those wanting guaranteed sightings.
Tips
- Peak weeks (Aug-Sep) shift yearly; ask operators about recent sightings before booking. - Never touch or crowd the sharks; keep a respectful distance in the water. - This is the north's hero hot-season water trip when the land is too hot. - Be a confident swimmer and follow the guide's in-water briefing.
