Starts in 70 daysJanuary 1, 2027 to March 31, 2027

Arabian Sea Humpback Whale Watching is a travel season in Salalah, Dhofar, Oman.

When
January 1, 2027 to March 31, 2027

Overview

Off the Dhofar coast lives one of the rarest large animals on the planet: the Arabian Sea humpback whale, the world's only known non-migratory, genetically isolated humpback population, found nowhere else in this form and listed as endangered. Rather than crossing oceans like other humpbacks, they stay year-round in these waters. The calm winter seas from January to March give the best odds of an encounter, on boat and dive trips out of Mirbat and the remote Hallaniyat Islands.

What to expect

A specialist, premium wildlife trip with no guarantees, since these are genuinely wild, scarce animals; sightings are a privilege, not a certainty. Winter seas off Dhofar are calmest and clearest for the attempt. Best combined with liveaboard diving around the Hallaniyat Islands; expect boat time and patience rather than a quick tour.

Best for

Serious wildlife travellers, divers and photographers willing to invest time for a globally unique encounter. Not for casual visitors expecting a guaranteed, easy sighting.

Tips

- Come in winter (Jan-Mar) when the seas off Dhofar are calmest. - Choose a specialist operator working the Mirbat and Hallaniyat waters. - Treat any sighting as a bonus; these whales are rare and wild. - Pair with Dhofar dive trips for the best value from the boat time.
