Overview
High above the interior, the summits of Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar sit far cooler than Muscat, and in the cool season their clear skies and mild days make for perfect walking. This is the window for the famous Balcony Walk along the rim of the Grand Canyon of Arabia, the abandoned-village trails of the Saiq plateau, and the stone stairways of the hanging village of Wakan. In summer these exposed routes top forty degrees and become genuinely unsafe.

Cool, clear days and cold nights at altitude, dramatic canyon and terrace scenery, and marked trails from gentle village walks to full-day rim routes. Peak conditions are December to February. Bring proper footwear, sun protection and warm layers; some trails have real exposure and need care.
Best for
Hikers, walkers, photographers and active travellers of most levels. Not for those wanting summer mountain hiking, which is dangerously hot on the exposed routes.
