Season
Jabal Akhdar Damask Rose Harvest
A mountain that turns pink, and the rosewater it distils
Jabal Akhdar Damask Rose Harvest is a travel season in Nizwa, Ad Dakhiliyah, Oman.
- When
- March 20, 2027 to May 5, 2027
Overview
Each spring the terraced farms of the Saiq plateau, two thousand metres up on Jabal Akhdar, flush pink as the Damask rose comes into bloom. In villages like Al Aqor and Al Ayn, families pick the petals by hand at dawn while the oils are strongest, then distil them over wood fires in copper stills into the rosewater that scents Omani coffee, sweets and homes. It is one of Oman's most sensory seasons, fragrant, photogenic and rooted in a cottage craft passed down for generations, and it lands in the pleasant spring shoulder.
What to expect
Mild spring days and cool nights on the plateau, terraces in bloom for a few short weeks, and small distillation houses busy at work. The exact bloom drifts a week or two each year with the weather. Weekends and the rose weeks draw day-trippers, so the villages can be busy; the scenery and the craft are the draw, not nightlife.
Best for
Couples, photographers, culture travellers and anyone who wants a gentle, scenic, aromatic experience with a village-craft story. Less suited to thrill-seekers or those needing hot beach weather.
Tips
- Go at dawn to see the picking and to catch the terraces in soft morning light. - Visit a village distillation house to watch the rosewater being made and to buy direct. - Bloom timing shifts yearly; check locally before locking in dates. - Bring a warm layer; plateau nights stay cold even in spring.
