Overview

Haima is the administrative capital and a wilayat of Al Wusta Governorate, Oman, a desert town on the main road across the central plains. It is best known as a refuelling and rest stop on long desert road trips and as a gateway to the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in the Jiddat Al Harasis, home to reintroduced Arabian oryx. From here travellers push on toward the Empty Quarter and Oman's remote interior.

Getting there

About 5 to 6 hours from Muscat on the sealed road toward Salalah, roughly halfway between Muscat and Dhofar.

Local tips

Fill up on fuel, water and food in Haima before continuing; services are scarce beyond the town. Wildlife viewing in the reserve requires permits and a guided 4WD trip.
