About

The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary is a desert protected area in the Jiddat al-Harasis plains of Oman's Al Wusta Governorate, established to conserve the reintroduced Arabian oryx and other desert wildlife such as gazelles and ibex. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 but in 2007 became the first site ever removed from the list, after Oman reduced its area by about 90% and the oryx population declined sharply.
