About
Qalhat is an ancient ruined port city on the coast of the Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate, about 20 kilometres north of Sur, Oman. A major hub of Indian Ocean trade between the 12th and 15th centuries and the second city of the Kingdom of Hormuz, it was described by both Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, its ruins include fortified walls and the surviving Mausoleum of Bibi Maryam.
