About

Mirbat is a historic fishing and trading town on the coast east of Salalah, once the ancient capital of Dhofar and a hub of the frankincense and Arabian-horse trade. Its old quarter keeps tall, weathered merchant houses with carved wooden doors and windows, and a small fort above the harbour. Just outside town, the twin-domed Bin Ali Tomb is one of Dhofar's most photographed landmarks, set against a coastal cemetery and the sea. Mirbat is also remembered for the 1972 battle fought at its fort.

Visitor Notes

Dress modestly at the tomb; pair with Jabal Samhan or a coastal drive east.
