Ubar, at the village of Shisr on the edge of the Empty Quarter, is the site of a lost frankincense caravan town sometimes called the "Atlantis of the Sands," and one of the UNESCO "Land of Frankincense" components. Its ruins sit around a collapsed limestone sinkhole that once fed a vital desert well on the trade route. Excavations here revealed a fortified settlement and pottery from across the ancient world. Remote and atmospheric, it is usually visited as part of a longer desert trip out to the dunes of the Rub al Khali.
Remote - about 2.5-3 hours from Salalah; combine with Wadi Dawkah and the Empty Quarter.
