Overview
Old Muscat is the historic core of Muscat, the capital of Oman, set in a natural harbour ringed by rocky hills. It long served as the seat of Omani rule and today holds Al Alam Palace, the 16th-century Portuguese-built Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, the National Museum, and Bait Al Zubair. The old Muscat Gate marks the entrance to the walled quarter, with the Mutrah Corniche and souq just to the west.

Getting there
The historic core sits on the coastal road east of Mutrah, about 15 minutes from central Muscat.
Local tips
The forts are closed to interior visits but can be viewed from outside, and Al Alam Palace is best photographed from its forecourt. Visit in the morning when it is cooler, and dress modestly.
